You'll have to move jumpers on the HDD itself to physically limit it. SATA2 & SATA3 drives should just be backwards compatible, however if it's some ridiculous problem which only effects these macs then /sigh. So my question is this, I have no hard copy available of snow leopard, wife doesn't know where it is. This is becoming a bigger and bigger headache.I believe you can use a Linux or Windows PC to format the new hard drive that you bought and format the drive to ExFAT in partitions to come just under 320GB in size So anyway, my wife apparently has lost her Snow leopard disk, never made a backup disk, downloaded Mountain Lion and installed it about 1 month before it died. A work around suggested by a few that said it worked was to format it with a PC then put it into the MBP.Īlso i found that these older macs cannot recognize SATA2 and 3gb/s bc they only support 1.5gb/s

Googled up some info and came across people saying that MBP from 08/09 cannot recognize disks larger than 320gb or some such. Went into disk utility, drive is not there.

Update: A buddy at work has a Mac so after work i went over to his place and accessed my wifes Itunes on his MBP downloaded Mountain Lion onto a USB and the Install Failed. Oh yea, My PC is windows based and i cannot DL it off her Itunes account to a USB to create a boot drive. I mean I already legally own both copies of the software, its juts one is lost and the other is online and unavailable to a PC user. So.is there any get this done aside from buying a hard copy of snow leopard or mountain lion again to put on a 4yr old MBP.

I called apple and the guy i talked to actually said, and i quote "Best bet if you don't own another Mac is to go to "the bay" download leopard and then upgrade from the app store to Mountain lion. But i have no way of getting Snow leopard or Mountain Lion to the new HDD i have installed on the MBP. So anyway, my wife apparently has lost her Snow leopard disk, never made a backup disk, downloaded Mountain Lion and installed it about 1 month before it died. About 95% of the time i cannot even access Utilities. I cant recover, reinstall, repair ect from any of the disk utilities.
